Schools in Baltimore will close for two days this week – and a ransomware attack, not the coronavirus, is to blame.
Baltimore County Public Schools tweeted on Saturday that there will be no lessons on Monday and Tuesday due to computer violation.
“This gives time for our staff to continue to work on building the educational platform and communicating next steps regarding the devices,” BCPS said of the two-day break.

The school district’s distance learning program, website, and messaging and grading systems all suffered a cyberattack last week, WBAL-TV reported.
The district IT department first identified the attack on Tuesday and notified staff early Wednesday.
Kindergarten teacher Elena Lomicky knew something was wrong when her school principal told staff not to connect to their computers.
“There was a bit of panic because I’m not tech-savvy at all,” the teacher at Villa Cresta Primary School told WBAL. “It was alarming.”

BCPS is working with the Baltimore County Police Department as part of the criminal investigation.
