Cyberpunk 2077, manufactured by video game company CD Projekt Red, offers V – a character that the player personalizes – who has a biochip infected with malware in his head. This malware takes the form of Johnny Silverhand, played by Reeves.
Pawel Sasko, the main designer of the quest for the game, said that CD Projekt Red knew he wanted to bring back Johnny Silverhand, leader of the rock band in the studio's previous title: Cyberpunk 2020 (Reeves's had not played the character of the previous game). The developers needed "a strong player capable of playing this role" from the beginning to the end of the game, Sasko said.
Johnny Silverhand is one of the characters with which players interact the most. CD Projekt Red asked Reeves to play Johnny because the actor had the habit of playing "very strong characters who often fight for something," Sasko said. Sasko cited the roles of Reeves as Neo in "The Matrix" trilogy and as an eponymous success in the movies "John Wick".
"And all these films also have a futuristic element, so it's going very well and we're saying, okay, try to hit it," he said. Sasko said.
Once Reeves was hired to capture movement and voice, Johnny Silverhand, the developers adapted the character to his personality. The lines were written to fit his tough street style.
Reeves also explained how to make the lines of the game more natural, Sasko said.
Throughout the game, players can see many sides of Johnny. Sasko compares him to Reeves in 20 films at a time. Because the video game is so vast and interactive, players can bring their relationship with Johnny de Reeves in many different directions. What kind of directions? Sasko will not spoil him.
This means that Reeves' agreement with the Cyberpunk 2077 is far from over. As the game is not over, the developer still presents Reeves with new lines for the recently completed game parts. Sasko said that working with Reeves was a pleasure because, despite his celebrity in Hollywood, the actor down to earth.
"For us as creators, it makes a huge difference when you can normally talk to a guy and agree on something – it's a big joy, actually," Sasko said.
A Reeves representative could be reached for a comment on Wednesday night. The Cyberpunk 2077 will be shipped in April 2020 and will be available on Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Windows.
