The besieged Cyberpunk 2077 sold 13 million copies, but the founders of developer CD Projekt Red lost $ 1 billion.
Bloomberg reports that (as of December 15 – five days after the game’s launch) the founders of CD Projekt Red have lost around US $ 1 billion. The developer was founded by Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński. Kiciński left the company in 2013 and Iwiński is the co-CEO of the company with Adam Kiciński (who is also the president of the company).
We previously reported how just three days after the game’s launch, CD Projekt Red’s stock value fell 29%. Bloomberg reported that the stock total fell by a third.
According to Business Insider, the shares closed at € 98.80 per share on December 4 and € 60.72 on December 30 – the first time the share’s value has started rising again since the decline. The company’s shares had previously fallen to € 73.80 per share on October 30 (shortly after the announcement of the game’s definitive delay), and to € 50.00 per share on March 12.
Bloomberg also reported that analysts’ estimates for Cyberpunk 207712-month sales fell from 30 million to 25.6 million after the game’s launch. However, CD Projekt revealed that as of December 20, the game has sold over 13 million copies. This figure is after reviewing refund requests via email directly to the developer.
CD Projekt Red previously announced that the game had sold 8 million copies in pre-order; composed of 59% PC and 41% consoles, with 74% digitally and 26% physically.
As previously stated, the game’s numerous delays and leaked images were not the end of CD Projekt Red’s woes. One reviewer suffered a major epileptic seizure and accused the developer of basing the Braindance headset on a medical device designed to intentionally induce seizures.
Despite the praise from the initial reviewers, the Metacritic user score was much lower. Currently, the Metascore for the PC version of the game is 86, with a user score of 7.2 (out of 10). Meanwhile, the scores for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users of the game are 3.4 and 4.7 respectively (with meta scores of 54 and 61 respectively).
It should be noted that those who have not played the game can also submit user reviews, as Metacritic does not check if a user has completed or played a game. In February for example, a user of Reset Era has orchestrated the bombing AI: The dream files.
Metacritic granted a 36-hour grace period for video game user reviews in July of this year. Metacritic would later insist that this decision was not motivated by reactions to a particular game. That year, low user review scores were also said for Warcraft III: Reforged, and The Last of Us Part II.
Users have complained about Cyberpunk 2077many issues and bugs, as well as poor optimization and the console version having inferior graphics. CD Projekt Red had to recommend fans to finish the game quickly and avoid creating too many items to avoid save file corruption, which was later fixed. Even critics who praised the game have also discussed these issues.
CD Projekt Red apologized for the publicity and the launch of the game, and offered a full refund. However, two legal actions were brought by investors, one in Poland being also a lawyer.
There are reports that CD Projekt Red has denied having entered into special reimbursement agreements for Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles, and that they were working on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game “until the very last minute.
Sony and Microsoft said they will offer a full refund for the game. Sony will remove the game from PlayStation Store, but there was “no discussionsMicrosoft removing it from theirs.
Although it was stated in the aforementioned Q&A call to investors that the team was focusing on fixing the game before any discussion of the game’s multiplayer or free DLC, a webpage was recently discovered – indicating that the first free DLC would launch in early 2021.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on Windows PC (via Epic Games, GOG, and Steam), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia. The game will also arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S in 2021, and players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the next generation for free, respectively.
