CD Projekt RED’s Besieged RPG Cyberpunk 2077 has lost 79% of its player base since launching just over a month ago.
That’s according to a new analysis from the video game statistics website GitHyp, which shows that the game’s player base has fallen to 225,000 players per day on Steam after its peak of more than 1 million concurrent players. In comparison, the latest version of CD Projekt RED, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, retained more than half of its player base a month after its launch in May 2015.
However, the report also states that the 79% drop is typical of most single player games, which typically lose the same percentage or more of its player base, while noting that open-world games are generally an exception. GitHyp also pointed out that CDPR has “a proven track record in fixing their PC games after launch,” saying this is one of the reasons the game “still maintains a positive average score on Steam”.
Despite the controversies over Cyberpunk 2077 and the loss of its player base, the game continued to sell well on Steam. According to PCGamesN, the game remained the best-selling game on Steam since the week ending November 22.
CDPR had previously claimed to have sold over 13 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077, even with refund requests on all platforms considered. About 8 million copies would come from pre-orders only, according to a previous report.
The CDPR is currently facing a class action lawsuit for Cyberpunk 2077buggy launch. On December 24, Manhattan-based law firm Rosen filed a lawsuit against the developer “on behalf of persons or entities who have purchased or otherwise acquired publicly traded CD Projekt Red securities.”
