Cyberpunk developer 2077 defends the first person point of view

Cyberpunk 2077 made headlines earlier this month when news came out that the game would focus primarily on a first-person perspective supplemented by an occasional third-person scene. Although the news did not diminish the enthusiasm generated by the game for everyone, some who hoped to see their character in the third person expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision. Cyberpunk 2077 creators CD Projekt Red responded to some of these concerns when the news was unveiled and talked more about it recently.

Addressing Video Games Chronicle at the Tokyo Game Show, the level designer Max Pears was asked about the decision made in the first person. Pears said, "There is logic in our process," and said the decision to play the game primarily in the first person was not random. The designer added that "a lot of thought" had been made in the decision.

At the first presentation of the game during the 2018 E3 demo, players could already see the character they had created in the third person. Pears added that, to his knowledge, these types of cinematics have not been modified to become a first person. He did say that the levels he had been working on "anyhow had first-person cinematic scenes," so it seems that players will see both types of cutscenes, in the same way what CD Projekt Red has expressed in the past.

The developer said that certain moments of the game would not have as much impact if they were presented in the third person.

"In last year's demo, you saw the interactive dialogue system, where someone shot you a gun in the face," Pears said. "I do not think you would necessarily have the same impact in the third person. It's moments like this that give the impression that it's your story and your character. "

Pears also acknowledged that some people were strongly convinced of the first-person or third-person debate, but reiterated that the team felt that "it was the right choice for this game."

A cinematic trailer released for the game at this year's E3 event showed a mix of first-person perspectives and third-person cinematics. It showed a male protagonist struggling with different threats and finally built for the big moment when we saw that Keanu Reeves would be in the game as Johnny Silverhand, the companion who will accompany the players throughout their course. A look behind the scenes of this demo showed how organized everything was.
