Daft Punk, the French electronic music duo who wore elaborate helmets, despised fame and took on robot characters, broke up. The group broke the news in a YouTube video titled Epilogue posted on Monday.

The video, which has been viewed over 6 million times in eight hours, uses scenes from the group’s 2006 sci-fi film Electroma. It shows the duo exiting into the desert, where one of them explodes and the other walks away, with “1993-2021” then appearing on screen. A publicist for the duo has confirmed the split with the New York Times.

French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter are the humans behind the helmets. The duo, who composed the score for the 2010 film Tron: Legacy, have won six Grammy Awards and influenced many musicians with their music and mythology. Their 2013 single, Get Lucky, featuring vocals by Pharrell Williams, reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. They were No. 1 as part of The Weeknd’s The 2016 single, Starboy, which they starred, co-wrote and co-produced.

Their recognizable look has been parodied on shows such as Family Guy, as well as in video games such as World of Warcraft. The band’s place in pop culture history – and these headsets – has sparked a lot of backlash on social media.

“I really wish Daft Punk hadn’t told us they were breaking up,” tweeted writer Caissie St. Onge. “Just give the helmet to a new guy and let’s think it’s okay. I also wish my parents wore helmets and did that. Maybe it’s more of a conversation to have with a therapist.

Another Twitter user wrote: “Daft Punk is just going their separate ways because in France you can retire at 50.”

And many have noted the group’s place in the history of music. “Electronic music would have been very different without Daft Punk,” wrote one fan. “They will definitely be missed, but thanks guys for everything.”
