The Daily Beast came under fire on Thursday after it ran a blockbuster article about actor Matthew McConaughey who accused him of “flirting with darlings of the alternative right,” but did not name actual alternate-right characters .
The article by entertainment reporter Laura Bradley sharply criticized Conservative complaints about the so-called “cancellation culture” while using a headline putting McConaughey in a movement associated with white nationalism.
Bradley tore McConaughey apart for sitting down with Canadian clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson and popular podcaster Joe Rogan in recent weeks to promote his “Greenlights” memoir. However, the author did not identify any of the figures as “alt-right,” a term for far-right white nationalists, in the story itself.

Bradley objected to the views of McConaughey and his interviewers on, among others, police reform, cancellation culture and the “illiberal left.” McConaughey, who speaks openly about his Christian faith, has also been the subject of anger on the left for calling Trump “our president” shortly after taking office in 2017 and urging Hollywood liberals to “be constructive with him”.

Bradley added towards the end of the long article that she was not advocating “quashing” McConaughey for views she found objectionable.
