SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Seventeen volunteers from South Dakota, North Dakota and Northwestern Minnesota have been deployed to help those affected by Hurricane Dorian. Volunteers will help those from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Eleven volunteers are from South Dakota and two from Northwestern Minnesota.
Patty Vaska is a volunteer from South Dakota. She has been a nurse at the Red Cross for two years. She went to the Carolinas in 2018 to help with the passage of Hurricane Florence. This time, Vaska will travel to Durham, North Carolina. She traveled there Wednesday and will deploy wherever she is needed. She will help for two weeks.
She said that she did not know what she would do to help until she got there. Vaska had to be ready within 24 hours to be deployed. In case she has this kind of call, she will keep some drawers and medical travel equipment at home.
This type of volunteering for her has been amazing.
"There is a lot of adrenaline and excitement, there is a little bit of fear because I do not know exactly what I'm going to get into," Vaska said. "I can never marvel at how people reach the best of humanity in the worst of circumstances."
