Ken Kercheval, who played oil tycoon Cliff Barnes, J.R. Ewing's rival of Larry Hagman on "Dallas," died. He was 83 years old.
A spokeswoman for Frist Funeral Home, in Clinton's home town of Kercheval, confirmed Wednesday. Varietybut did not provide any additional information.
Kercheval and Hagman are the only two stars to have appeared on CBS's "Dallas" soap opera in its 14 seasons broadcast from 1978 to 1991. Kercheval was a recurring character during the first two seasons, but later reached the 1979 season rank. -1980. He resumed his role at the "Dallas" meeting of 1996, the special stage of the 2004 CBS meeting and the resumption of TNT 2012-2014. He was one of the five stars in the series who directed the episodes, taking orders for two episodes for Seasons 13-14.

In the 1960s, Kercheval appeared on Broadway in Harold Prince's "The Apple Tree" and "Cabaret". Kercheval's career on the small screen was prolific, with appearances in "Search for Tomorrow" in the '60s and early' 70s, "CHiPs," "The Love Boat," "Murder, She Wrote," " ER ", etc.

Kercheval was born July 15, 1935 in Wolcottville, Indiana, and grew up near Clinton. He studied music and theater at Indiana University and then studied at the New York Neighborhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner.
A large smoker, Kercheval had part of his lung removed in 1994 after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
