Dallas County Reports 1,589 New Coronavirus Cases, 16 More Deaths

Dallas County reported 1,589 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, along with 16 more deaths from COVID-19.

Eight of the latest victims were residents of Dallas: two men in their fifties, a man and woman in their sixties, two women in their sixties and two women in their fifties.

The other victims were two men from Garland, one in his 70s and one in his 80s, who lived in a long-term care facility; two men from Grand Prairie in their 80s; a Cutchin woman in her sixties; an Irving man in his forties; a mesquite woman in her fifties; and a Richardson woman in her 60s who lived in a long-term care facility.

Two of the women in their 60s, from Dallas and Richardson, did not have underlying health conditions that put them at a higher risk of complications from COVID-19, officials said.

County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement that the latest medical modeling from researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center shows Dallas County is expected to have around 2,700 new daily cases of COVID-19 by the end of January.

“We must remain vigilant in our efforts to stop and slow the spread of this virus,” Jenkins said.

Of the new cases, 1,351 were confirmed and 238 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the county total to 236,214 – 208,991 confirmed cases and 27,223 probable cases. The death toll stands at 1,887.

Health officials are using hospitalizations, intensive care admissions and emergency room visits as key indicators to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the county. In the 24-hour period that ended Monday, 1,160 patients with COVID-19 were in acute care at county hospitals. During the same period, 505 emergency room visits were for symptoms of the disease.

According to state data, 87,704 people in Dallas County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 15,021 are fully immune.

Texas

Statewide, 9,476 more cases were reported Tuesday – 9,381 new and 95 older cases recently reported by labs.

The state also reported 310 deaths from COVID-19, bringing its toll to 32,394.

Of the new cases, 8,312 were confirmed and 1,069 were probable. Of the older cases, 53 were confirmed and 42 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the state total to 2,135,028 – 1,872,614 confirmed cases and 262,414 probable cases.

There are 13,928 patients with COVID-19 in Texas hospitals, including 3,926 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As of Monday, 24.2% of patients in the hospital region covering the Dallas-Fort Worth area were COVID-19 patients – above the 15% threshold used by the state to define high hospitalizations.

The statewide seven-day average positivity rate for molecular testing, based on the date of sample collection, was 16.1% on Monday. For antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 9.8%. A molecular test is considered more accurate and is sometimes also called a PCR test; an antigen test is also called a rapid test. Governor Greg Abbott said a positivity rate of over 10% was concerning.

According to state data, 1,181,483 people in Texas have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 177,193 are fully immune.

Tarrant County

Tarrant County reported 1,929 coronavirus cases and 12 deaths on Tuesday.

The latest victims include five Arlington residents: two men in their sixties, two women in their sixties and a man in their sixties. The others were two residents of Fort Worth, a woman in her 50s and a man in his 60s; a woman from Bedford in her 80s; a Crowley woman in her sixties; a Hurst man in his 70s; a Richland Hills woman in her 80s; and a Sansom Park man in his 40s.

Ten of the victims had underlying high-risk health conditions, officials said.

Of the new cases, 1,841 were confirmed and 88 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the county total to 197,447 – 171,001 confirmed cases and 26,446 probable cases. The death toll stands at 1904.

According to the county, 1,474 people were hospitalized with the virus on Monday.

According to state data, 62,773 people in Tarrant County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 5,925 are fully immune.

Collin County

The state added 879 coronavirus cases and nine Collin County total deaths on Tuesday.

No details on the latest casualties were available.

Of the new cases, 794 were confirmed and 85 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the county total to 64,721 – 56,146 confirmed cases and 8,575 probable cases. The death toll stands at 483.

According to the county, 522 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to state data, 31,344 people in Collin County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 4,304 are fully immune.

Denton County

Denton County reported 1,064 coronavirus cases and eight deaths on Tuesday.

The latest victims were a Corinthian man in his 50s, a Denton woman in her 60s who lived at the Brinker Senior Care Center, a Lewisville man over 80 who lived in Cedar Crest, a Northlake woman in her 80s , a Pilot Point man in his 70s who lived at the Pilot Point Care Center and three people who lived in the unincorporated county of Denton – a woman in her 70s and a man and woman over 80.

Of the new cases, 739 were confirmed and 325 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the county total to 47,336 – 38,212 confirmed cases and 9,124 probable cases. The death toll stands at 257.

According to the county, 204 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to state data, 19,017 people in Denton County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 2,411 are fully immune.

Other counties

The Texas Department of State Health Services have resumed reporting for these other North Texas counties. In some countries, new data may not be communicated every day.

The latest numbers are:

• Rockwall County: 8,222 cases (6,873 confirmed and 1,349 probable), 78 deaths.
• Kaufman County: 11,450 cases (9,962 confirmed and 1,488 probable), 154 deaths.
• Ellis County: 16,403 cases (14,457 confirmed and 1,946 probable), 201 deaths.
• Johnson County: 14,435 cases (12,872 confirmed and 1,563 probable), 213 deaths.
