FRISCO, Texas – If Dak Prescott does not play against the Houston Texans on Saturday, he will appear in the Sept. 9 opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without any preparatory work, according to coach Mike McCarthy.
McCarthy said the Cowboys would use their fourth preseason game on Aug. 29 against the Jacksonville Jaguars to assess their roster low for their Final Cups.
“We’ll see how the week goes, but from my perspective, there’s no rush to see Dak play against Houston,” said McCarthy. “It’s more about not creating a possible backhand. His pitching volume up to this point, I mean, he was probably in midseason form because of the amount of work he put in at the over the summer, out of OTAs. I’m just trying to bring this volume back to its place. “
The Cowboys have two more full practices this week – Wednesday and Thursday – before Saturday’s game at AT&T Stadium against the Texans. At the start of training camp, McCarthy, owner and general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones felt it was important for Prescott to get preseason work before playing the Buccaneers due to of the layoff from his right ankle injury suffered last October.
“I think we would all like that, but it’s not the priority,” McCarthy said. “I think his throwing volume, bringing the ability back to where it was, is the # 1 thing.”
Prescott is doing limited workout on Monday as he continues to recover from a latissimus strain in his right shoulder that has kept him from performing team drills since July 28. In the Cowboys’ final days in Oxnard, Calif., Prescott started stepping up his throws and had a pitching session leading up to last week’s preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals.
The Cowboys host their first Star training camp in Frisco, TX on Monday.
“We’re going to try to keep him out of the competitive throw,” said McCarthy. “It’s more about the people around him and just try[ing] to keep him also rested as long as possible. “
