At a time when exclusion rates have exploded and 90 is 90, it's refreshing to see Dallas Keuchel work his art.
The veteran southpaw continued to do his thing Friday night at Petco Park, throwing seven ball heats for a point as the Padres were regularly flip-flopping over his arsenal of ground. You can count on one hand the number of times he hit 90 on the radar gun.
The Braves won by a score of 5-3.
Keuchel did not have a full mastery tonight, but he was able to get around two incidents without too much trouble. He made six hits – five singles and one homer – while walking four and eliminating five. His ERA is 3.09 with five starts. He has now launched more than 7 innings in three consecutive starts.
The Braves bats were quick to leave after the four-day break. Josh Donaldson crashed a three-run circuit in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead over Dinelson Lamet.
Ronald Acuña Jr. then tidied up his worries about a Home Run Derby hangover while he shot a solo shot at Lamet in the fifth inning and that he was running 445 feet.
Manny Machado put San Diego on the sixth-place scoring chart with a reverse shot from the left field that has never been in doubt. That's all the difficult contact that San Diego would really have with Keuchel, as he worked brilliantly on both sides of the plate.
Donaldson would then line up his second outfield player of the evening – and his 20th overall in the season – in the right-hand row, leading 8th to extend Atlanta's lead to 5-1.
Chad Sobotka entered the lower half of the 8th and was not accurate, allowing a single to Machado and a drive to Hunter Renfroe. Fortunately, Franmil Reyes smoked a 3-2 slider until Ozzie Albies, who doubled the double. Sobotka would quickly drop a single to score with two outs, however, ending his night and forcing Brian Snitker to bring Jacob Webb to the final.
As usual, Luke Jackson caused a drama in the 9th match by allowing Manny Machado to score the tying goal, but a low scorer was launched over the diamond for the final. It was the fifteenth save of the year for Jackson.
The second game of the series will take place on Saturday evening at 20:10. And while Julio Teheran is trying to keep the magic that remains against left-handed Joey Lucchesi (7-4, 3.94).
