The Minnesota Vikings scored touchdowns on their first four possessions, all by Davin Cook, as they knocked out the Green Bay Packers, 28-22, Sunday at Lambeau Field.
Cook totaled 226 scrum yards, scoring three rushing touchdowns and taking a 50-yard strike for a score to open the game. After scoring twice against Green Bay in Week 1, Cook became the first Viking to score three touchdowns at Lambeau since Chuck Foreman did so in 1974.
Who would have thought that Cook, who hadn’t played since week 5, had just returned from a groin injury?
The Green Bay defense eventually stopped the bleeding, holding Minnesota scoreless for the final 20 minutes, but by then it was too late. The Packers started a pair of rookies at inside linebacker – Krys Barnes and Kamal Martin – and both seemed to struggle early on.
The Packers’ run defense has been hot and cold this season, entering the ranked game in the middle of the pack in run defense. But it’s now twice this season now that Minnesota have exploited that weakness.
The Packers had taken a 7-0, 14-7 lead in the first half, but couldn’t stop Cook. He also became the first Packers opponent to score four times at Lambeau since DeAngelo Williams of the Panthers in 2008.
After scoring their second TD, the Packers went 32 minutes without scoring. Aaron Rodgers came to Green Bay with a late practice, connecting with Davante Adams for their third touchdown of the game. The next two-point conversion gave the Packers a chance to win.
But Cook helped freeze the game with a late first run that drained the clock with less than a minute remaining.
Rodgers finished the game 27 of 41 passes for 291 yards and three TD assists. He wasn’t sacked or punched in the opening 59-plus minutes of the game. But on Rodgers’ last pass attempt, Vikings rookie DJ Wonnum hit Rodgers on a fumble that sealed him for Minnesota.
Rodgers’ counterpart Kirk Cousins hasn’t been asked to do much after struggling recently. But Cousins was an efficient 11 of 14 passes for 160 yards and was only sacked once.
