SPOILER ALERT: This message contains details about the Billion Season 5 finale which debuted in streaming early this morning and on Showtime tonight

Damian Lewis has left Showtime’s Billion.

With his very wealthy Bobby Axelrod on the run to Switzerland from the legal clutches of Empire State Attorney General Paul Giamatti, the Emmy winner ended his five-season run on Brian Koppelman, David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin created a drama high finance with a smile tonight. After years of being one step ahead of the law and a big loss, Axelrod also saw almost all of his considerable fortune wipe out as he settled into a handcuffed life in Europe.

Or as Lewis’ Axelrod told billionaire rival Mike Prince (Corey Stoll), who now owns all of his businesses, “So that’s what it’s like to lose.

Executive producer Koppelman took to social media right after the Bob Dylan-infused episode of “No Direction Home” concluded to congratulate Lewis:

Back for the second half of its final season, renewed for a sixth round series, on September 5 after a pandemic shutdown, Billion Expanded the battle between UTA replaced Axelrod of Lewis and Chuck Rhodes of Giamatti to include the former House of Cards star Stoll in a very unholy trinity.

Tragically, in real life, during the more than a year hiatus in Season 5, Lewis’s wife, Helen McCrory, has passed away. The Peaky Blinders star died of cancer at the age of 52 in April this year. “I have never known someone who could enjoy life so much,” Lewis wrote in a touching tribute in the Sunday Times London April 18. “Her ability to be in the present and enjoy the moment was inspiring. She was also not interested in navel-gazing. No real personal interest in self-reflection; she believed in looking outside, not inside. This is why she was able to enlighten others so brilliantly.

Also starring Asia Kate Dillon, Maggie Siff, David Costabile, Condola Rashad, Kelly AuCoin and Jeffrey DeMunn, BillionThe Season 5 finale lifted a bit of the real-life escape with the replay of Axelrod stopping Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn’s secret theft out of Japan in 2019.

As Lewis ceded his lead role to Stoll, there’s a chance I hear the actor could make an appearance or two in season six – which is set to debut on January 23.

Check out the No Lewis Season 6 trailer, which aired right after the Season 5 finale tonight, here:

Amid the changes and new alliances and betrayals to come in the new year and new season, Daniel Breaker, who has played the wily but outstretched right-hand man of Prince Scoter for the past two years, has become a regular on the show.

Now with former allies AG Rhodes and Prince at war, the battle for Billion continues – even if chance faces.
