Tom Brokaw, who announced his retirement from NBC News on Friday, certainly has a lot of friends.
Andrea Mitchell, Lester Holt, Dan Rather, Maria Shriver and many more wished him luck. They recalled working with Brokaw during his 55 years with the network, while covering the 1968 presidential campaign, including the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy; President Ronald Reagan’s first political campaign; and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
As NBC noted, Brokaw was the only presenter to direct its three main news shows: Evening news, Today and Meet the press. He sat in the presenter’s chair for the prime-time show at 30 Rock from 1982 to 2004, and he continued to contribute to NBC’s coverage in the years since he left the job. In 2008, he served as moderator of the interview program Meet the press for several months after the death of Tim Russert. He continued to work as a contributor and commentator.
Mitchell, who works alongside Brokaw at NBC, said he’s as important to the network as his peacock mascot.

The current host of the newscast that Brokaw once ran, Holt, praised his colleague for having more free time, which the 80-year-old plans to spend with his family.

Rather, Brokaw’s CBS competition from his days at NBC Nightly News, called him “always much more friend”.

Brokaw’s other honors over the years include NBC who dedicated his West Coast facility, the Brokaw News Center, to him in 2014, and President Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom that same year.
Brokaw himself issued a statement earlier today: “During one of the most complex and significant eras in American history, a new generation of journalists, producers and technicians at NBC News provides the United States with timely, insightful, and critically important information. /seven. I couldn’t be more proud of them.
As he leaves the television behind, the author of The greatest generation and other books, should continue his work by writing.
