Dana White: Justin Gaethje vs. Charles Oliveira “ probably ” next

The Light Division will move forward with massive fights in 2021 – with or without Khabib Nurmagomedov pictured.

UFC 257 will feature a highly anticipated rematch between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier in the main event, as well as the octagon debut of former Bellator champion Michael Chandler as he faces Dan Hooker.

UFC President Dana White took part in a virtual fan Q&A on ESPN + on Tuesday and answered fan questions read by Laura Sanko. One of the questions asked of White was what the next step is for former interim champion Justin Gaethje.

“If all goes well, it will probably be (Charles) Oliveira,” White said.

White reiterated that before Chandler was paired with Hooker, the UFC hoped to book his promotional debut against Oliveira, but winning 155 straight months was not in the cards. “Do Bronx” is on an eight-game winning streak, which includes wins in 2020 over Kevin Lee in March and Tony Ferguson at UFC 256.

Gaethje won the interim lightweight title with a fifth round finish from Ferguson in the main event of UFC 249. “The Highlight” then faced Nurmagomedov for the undisputed title and was submitted to the second round at the UFC 254 in what could be the undefeated champion’s final fight.

Of course, all of those plans could change if Nurmagomedov – who is due to meet with White next week in Abu Dhabi – decides to change his mind.
