Alex Trebek took on his role as Danger! the host seriously, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t laugh.

Brad Rutter, one of the show’s biggest winners, recalled the infamous joke of the late host on the 2005 “Ultimate Tournament of Champions” show. He recalled Trebek’s final Danger! The show airs Friday – two months after the iconic game show host died from pancreatic cancer.

“We were so nervous, we were all pale as a ghost,” Rutter, now an ABC game show star The hunt, said in an interview with the Philadelphia radio station 98.1 WOGL.

To “cut the tension”, Rutter and his opponents Ken Jennings and Jerome Vered felt, one of them joked that they should enter the competition without pants.

It was just a silly joke that they walked away from, not realizing that “our mics were live and Alex heard us,” Rutter said.

So when show announcer Johnny Gilbert made his famous introduction for Trebek, calling him to the set, the host laughed with the contestants and “walked out pantsless,” Rutter recalls.

The always dapper Trebek wore a costume otherwise, making it a fun visual. After the laughs, the host returned backstage to finish dressing before continuing.

Rutter explained how contestants for the show, which Trebek hosted for nearly 37 years, are “not allowed to talk a lot” because it is a competition. However, “I’ve been fortunate to be on the show so often,” earning nearly $ 5 million and a Hall of Fame spot from Jeopardy !, “which I got to know a little bit about Alex. “

He said that having that personal connection to Trebek, he got to see his sense of humor “even more in person than you would see on the show.”

Trebek lost his battle with cancer in November at the age of 80. He worked until the end, recording his last shows on October 29. He died 10 days later.

Initially, the show planned to continue airing episodes of Trebek, with the last airing on December 25. However, they changed the plan, instead airing specials – “Alex’s Favorite Episodes in the World” – and his final episode airs Friday.

No successor has been announced, but some guest hosts are lined up. Jennings, who holds the record for most wins in the series, will intervene – despite bad press lately. Its episodes are scheduled to air from January 11.

It was announced this week that Katie Couric will also be the guest host for a week.
