Daniel Craig may have portrayed the crafty international spy James Bond, but when it comes to internet and social media memes, the actor is blissfully oblivious.
In an interview published Thursday in The New York Times, Dave Itzkoff spoke to the actor in a story that began over a year and a half ago to coincide with Craig’s last stint as Bond in the franchise. No time to die. The film’s release has been postponed several times due to the pandemic, and its theatrical release is now scheduled for October 8.
Itzkoff met the actor in a follow-up call to the temperature article, where Craig discussed his tenure as 007, his role as Benoit Blanc in Knives Out and his next Broadway tour portraying Macbeth.
During their conversation, Itzkoff mentioned that they were talking on a Friday afternoon and that social media would soon be filled with videos of Craig introducing the Weeknd on Saturday Night Live. In the clip, Craig introduces musical guest The Weeknd, but he delivers the lines “Ladies and Gentlemen … the Weeknd” with a shrug that resonated like a double meaning, which has become meme-worthy.
“Has the popularity of this returned to you in any way?” Itzkoff asks. Craig replies, “No, what is it? Itzkoff explains that Craig’s clip is used to signal the start of the actual weekend.
” They’re doing it ? Craig replied. “It’s amazing. I don’t know what it is, but thanks. It’s adorable. Guess I should have social media to find out what it was about.
