Daniel Craig paid tribute to Sean Connery, calling his comrade 007 “one of the real greats of cinema”. Connery died overnight in his sleep. He was 90 years old.
Over a decades-long career, Connery won an Oscar for “The Untouchables” and appeared in hits such as “The Rock”, “The Man Who Would Be King”, “Time Bandits” and “Indiana Jones” and the Last Crusade ”. He was best known, however, as the man who introduced James Bond to moviegoers with “Dr. No. ”Connery would go on to play the suave super-spy in six other films, including“ Goldfinger, ”“ Thunderball, ”and“ From Russia With Love. ”As Bond, a ladies’ man authorized to kill, Connery was witty and sophisticated, with an ever-present hint of danger.
Craig became the last Bond of “Casino Royale” of 2006. He has played the role a total of five times, with the upcoming “No Time to Die” as his final release. Craig’s been widely regarded as the best Bond lately… with the exception of Connery’s original.
“It was with such sadness that I learned of the passing of one of the real greats of cinema,” Craig said in a statement. “Sir Sean Connery will be remembered as Bond and more. He defined an era and a style. The spirit and charm that it portrays on screen can be measured in megawatts; he helped create the modern blockbuster. He will continue to influence actors and filmmakers for years to come. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Wherever it is, I hope there is a golf course.
In a separate statement, Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said Connery “was and will always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entry into movie history began when he announced those unforgettable words, “The name of Bond… James Bond. “”
