Each selection in the draft NFL is open for debate, analysis and immediate approval or rejection. The victory over Daniel Jones with choice number 6 is a feat not to be missed.
The reaction gives the impression that giants prepare their game by throwing darts. A case can and must certainly be presented. General Manager Dave Gettleman needed the chance to see defenseman Josh Allen throw himself on the Giants' lap, take it, then maneuver aggressively to move from number 17 to Jones, who would not be in the top 10 if the Giants did not catch it and did not provoke fan revolt.
Gettleman insists that he could not do that. He was Jonesing for Jones, saying, "I know for a fact that there were two teams that would have taken him in front of 17." Perhaps. Maybe not.
One of these teams, despite swirling speculation, does not appear to be the Redskins, who sat 15th and took a quarterback, Dwayne Haskins. An NFL source told The Post that the Redskins coaching staff was not happy with this choice. Could it be that the owner of the Redskins, Daniel Snyder, fell in love with Haskins – Snyder's son played soccer at Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, a few years after Haskins played it – and became a thug to search for Haskins?
The Broncos would also have been interested in Jones, but more specific information provided by Denver reveals that this was not the case. The Broncos preferred Drew Lock and took him to the second round, with the choice at 42nd.
Could the Giants have taken Allen at number 6 and then sitting at 17 to take Jones? Gettleman was not going to take the risk. Conviction is a good thing and if the Giants – from property to bankruptcy – are confident that Jones will provide the franchise with the main ingredients Eli Manning brings to the team every day over the last 16 years, the move was to lead to the impact of over-criticism.
There may be no player in this project capable of having a more powerful and immediate impact with the Giants than Allen. Moving safely, to the extent that the conventional value required it, was to take it and find a quarter later. If Jones was gone, as Gettleman feared, turn to Plan B at the quarterback at number 17 or number 37, or maneuver around the board and get one. That did not interest the giants.

Obviously, the Giants like Jones and only liked the other quarters. It would be Gettleman's responsibility to stop talking about the "Kansas City model" and, more recently, the "Green Bay model," while the only argument he's trying to make is that he sees great value for a young quarter-man spending his rookie year in a role that does not play, absorbing the knowledge of a professional pro. The model Gettleman should support is Giants, 2004: a rookie (Manning) waits his turn and if the season continues, he will eventually replace the veteran (Kurt Warner).
Gettleman does not intend to see Jones sit for three years – Aaron Rodgers waits behind Brett Favre.
