In the Tom Brady vs. Bill Belichick debate, Danny Amendola is squarely the Brady team.
Amendola, who won two Super Bowls and played another in his five years as the New England Patriots wide receiver, said on Monday that Brady, not Belichick and the Patriots coaching staff, was the main reason for the success of the franchise.
The Broad sparked the take after he was asked during an appearance on FOX Sports “First Things First” if Belichick will have a harder time convincing players to “buy” with Brady now in Tampa Bay.
“When you see the ‘Patriot Way’ in the dictionary, there’s the picture of Tom Brady next to it,” Amendola replied. “None of these coaches threw passes. None of these coaches caught any passes. None of these coaches made a tackle. They put the guys in the right position because they watch a lot of movies and spend all of their time in the facility.
“But Tom Brady is the ‘Patriot Way’, and that’s why Tom Brady is in the Super Bowl right now and the Patriots are not.
Amendola, who suffered several pay cuts during his tenure with the Patriots, left New England after the 2017 season after receiving a more lucrative offer from the Miami Dolphins. That spring, he told ESPN’s Mike Reiss that Belichick was “not easy” to play and that he was “a (hole)” sometimes.
“There were a lot of things that I didn’t like playing for him,” Amendola said in 2018. “But I have to say that the things that I didn’t like were all about improving the team, and I respected him. ”
Brady went in free agency last offseason. In his first year with the Buccaneers, he led them to an 11-5 record, three straight road playoff wins and a Super Bowl LV date with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday.
The Patriots replaced Brady with Cam Newton, went 7-9, missed the playoffs and no longer have a clear answer in the quarterback for 2021.
Amendola is set to become a free agent after spending the last two seasons with the Detroit Lions.
