Dark Phoenix Lands with a Thud

This weekend at the cinema, we have a problematic heroine (Dark Phoenixwith Sophie Turner and James McAvoy) and the animation of the domestication of Illumination (The secret life of pets 2, featuring the voices of Patton Oswalt and Kevin Hart). What do the critics say?

The last chapter of the X Men The actual franchise (and probably the last one that will feature these characters for a while) takes its story directly from one of the most popular and famous comic book stories, and we've seen it before. "The Dark Phoenix Saga", as its name suggests, was recounted in two different animated series and then made its big screen appearance in 2006. X-Men: The Final Clash. Simon Kinberg, screenwriter of this film, who also spent time writing or producing all of the following films, made his debut as a director here, following the telepathic mutant Jean Gray (Sophie Turner) who fought for control the immense and dangerous power that wakes up in her when she suffers an accident in the space. Regulars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and the rest of the young X-Men all return to their roles, but critics say their efforts are largely unsuccessful, because of the uninspired storytelling, wooden performance, and a feeling not quite surprising "been there, does that." Hard-core fans may be able to recognize some of Kinberg's nods and nods. Dark Phoenixand anyone looking for a two-hour diversion may feel satisfied, but the end result is a decidedly disappointing franchise conclusion that does not capitalize on its potential.

2016 The secret life of pets did for cats and domestic dogs that Toy Story made for dolls and action figures, training the public in a mostly fun adventure with friendly characters cast by a talented cast. Most of them are back for The secret life of pets 2which divides the action into three ill-linked narrative threads and which, says the critic, suffers a little. Patton Oswalt plays the replacement voice for Max (previously voiced by Louis C.K.), who panics when her owner Katie (Ellie Kemper) brings a baby home; Kevin Snow's Snowball teams up with newcomer Daisy (Tiffany Haddish) to rescue a white tiger from a circus; and Jenny Slate's Gidget tries to grab Max's favorite toy in a nearby apartment infested with cats. These are all harmless stuff that should interest a younger audience and there are probably just enough to get everyone involved. Do not expect to be impressed by new tricks, so to speak.

What's new on TV

Beautiful and striking, Big little liesThe second season of the series doubles the dark humor and gives his impressive cast an even more juicy drama, including the excellent Meryl Streep.

The servant's tale"The third season reigns in its horrors and inspires the hope that the revolution is really possible – if only history stopped turning in circles and reached it already.

Although Black mirror"The fifth abridged season never reaches the peaks (or surprises) of previous episodes, it remains one of the strangest philosophical offerings of televisions – for better or for worse.
