- One developer relaunched Dark Sky for Android as an unofficial app weeks after Apple shutdown.
- Darker Sky replicates most of the free features of the weather app.

Apple officially shut down Dark Sky for Android on August 1, just over four months after acquiring the weather app, but there’s still a way to keep using it – albeit in a very unofficial fashion.
XDA has learned that an anonymous developer is offering Darker Sky, a Dark Sky resurrection that provides the app’s detailed weather forecast data as well as the familiar look of the defunct official software. Most of the free Android client features remain intact, including full forecast, time machine, precipitation, temperature, and radar.
You will not receive weather notifications, report submissions, or widgets. Unsurprisingly, you won’t get the paid features either. Apple isn’t about to run these services, especially not when it’s more interested in rolling out Dark Sky features in iOS 14.

The app won’t be available in the Play Store, as you can guess, and you’re taking risks by installing decidedly unofficial software that’s only available from the mysterious operator of a Telegram channel. Be careful, then. We also wouldn’t be surprised if Apple restricts the app.
If Darker Sky goes missing, you’re not completely without short-term luck. Third-party apps can still use Dark Sky data until the end of 2021, so there might be an alternative. This is primarily for die-hard fans of the Dark Sky Android app who want to hang on to a well-known interface until they have no choice but to move on. Look at it this way: the app won’t bring Dark Sky back to Android, but it might ease the pain of saying goodbye.
