A reboot of “Darkwing Duck” is in development at Disney Plus, Variety learned from sources.
No writer is currently attached to the project, but sources indicate that it will be produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver and Alex McAtee of Point Gray Pictures. McAtee will oversee the project for the company.
Point Gray representatives did not immediately respond Varietyrequest for comment from. Disney declined to comment.
The original “Darkwing Duck” was created by Tad Stones and ran from 1991 to 1992 for three seasons and 91 episodes. It originally aired on The Disney Channel and ABC while also syndicating. The series followed the titular duck superhero, who lived an ordinary suburban life under the secret identity of Drake Mallard. He is helped in his fight against crime by his sidekick and Launchpad pilot McQuack. He is also sometimes assisted by his adopted daughter, Gosalyn. The show featured the voices of Jim Cummings in Darkwing Duck, Christine Cavanaugh in Gosalyn, and Terry McGovern in Launchpad.
The show had ties to other Disney animated series “DuckTales,” with Launchpad appearing in both the original “DuckTales” and the recent reboot. More recently, Darkwing and Gosalyn also appeared on the rebooted show. In this version, Darkwing is a fictional character from an old superhero television series. In Season 2, Mallard, the president of the Darkwing Duck fan club, has the chance to become Darkwing in real life and begins to fight crime. Gosalyn was introduced in Season 3.
If the project were to go into series, it would be the latest version of Disney Plus on a well-known property. The streamer is currently broadcasting the series “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”, based on the “High School Musical” film franchise. They are also preparing a female reboot of “Doogie Howser MD” and a sequel to the movie “Willow” among many others.
In addition to their cinematic work, Point Gray currently has several on-air shows on premium cable and streaming. The company produces the Showtime comedy “Black Monday,” which was recently renewed for a third season. At Amazon, Point Gray is producing the hit comic book adaptation “The Boys.” The show proved to be so popular that Amazon not only launched a third season and an after-show, but also announced the development of a spin-off.
Point Gray is replaced by UTA and Felker Toczek.
