ALLEN PARK – Darrell Bevell’s promotion to interim head coach is forcing the Detroit staff to rely on each other more than ever, picking up the coins ahead of the season’s return home.
Bevell joins defensive meetings for the first time, getting a taste of the different state of mind in these rooms. Lions defensive coordinator Cory Undlin has been in Matt Patricia’s shadow for most of the season, but it looks like he will get the undisputed keys to defense from the team’s new interim coach. While Undlin remains coy about what will or has changed, Bevell expressed confidence in the first-year coordinator to handle the defense.

As the spotlight was put on the relationship between Bevell and Undlin, Lions special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs hinted that more high-profile items could befall him. But this does not stop only with the coordinators. Lions quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan took over for Bevell during Tuesday’s media availability for coordinators each week. Ryan is not only taking on additional press duties, but also sees an increase in responsibility for planning practices and prep work. Robert Prince, the team’s receiving coach, added that the attacking staff know they need to “take a little load” to get Bevell to ride the best he can.
“I think of all of us, much like I said earlier. We all enjoyed handling different areas of script throughout this deal, ”Ryan said. “I don’t know if this will change drastically, but maybe a little more on my plate this way. Ryan, who has generated interest in offensive coordinator jobs in recent years, said he’s ready for the increased duties thanks to the way he approaches his role as quarterback coach. It certainly looks like Bevell will take all the help he can get, jokingly saying that he hit the wall a bit earlier than usual on day one.

“Well, I look at it like, ‘I can start over.’ I mean, I’m telling you: I’m so excited. I mean, I’m happy to do this. I told the support staff around me – they were great, as I mentioned yesterday.
