Last Saturday, UFC middleweight Darren Till was having a bad day when the little voice behind his head told him to stop moping and hit the gym. No one was there, so he practiced alone, in the dark, yelling at himself in the mirror.
A broken collarbone was the only hiatus from a fight camp that makes Till feel like he’s stretching for a year, and the break he thinks he needs next is overshadowed by another as he he’s approaching a UFC Vegas 36 headliner against Derek Brunson.
“I’m in a good position,” Till said on Monday. MMA time. “I feel violent. I feel very, very violent.
Till, who is tied with Yoel Romero for 10th in the MMA World Ranking, is known for his sometimes offensive jokes and memes, but his motivation has not wavered through the ups and downs of his recent career. . Despite a 1-3 record capped by a loss to ex-champion Robert Whittaker and the broken bone that wiped out his UFC Vegas 23 headliner against Marvin Vettori, the 28-year-old Briton’s goals have not changed.
“I will suffer 20 losses, I will suffer 55 losses, I will suffer injury after injury after injury to get to where I want to be,” said Till. “It’s good to see guys like Charles Oliveira, Jan Blachowicz… it’s good to see these kind of guys doing the things they do. Charles lost against [Donald] ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, and now he’s the champ. … I am ready to do whatever it takes with me and my team.
“I have visualizations of winning this belt, [and] when Joe Rogan comes up to me with the mic, throwing the mic out of his hands and giving it to [my head coach] Colin [Heron] so that he can deliver the necessary speech. And I get out of the cage with my belt, I let him have his speech, and I throw the belt on his desk the next day, and we continue.
“I visualize it all, mate, but I believe it. With all the frolics, these are hype fights, but don’t twist it, I don’t take this lightly. … I wake up everyday and put my soul, mind and body through hell and back.
Whittaker is expected to be the next challenger to win the title from Israel Adesanya, although the pandemic may delay the fight until 2022. Till has a friendly rivalry with Adesanya and has a message for the champion.
“Listen, good luck, good luck Izzy on your trip,” Till said. “He’s a fan of me, and I’m a fan of him. But I’ll beat you, Izzy. I’ll beat you, mate. You fucking know it.
Adesanya smiled when asked about Till’s post as the next guest on “The MMA Hour.”
“Ah, Darren, Darren, in case I didn’t know,” he joked. “We don’t talk all the time. We talk often. We’re cool. But he just has to win first. I’ve exposed it to him so many times, and he keeps falling apart. Like, Jesus Christ, make it all come together, Darren. So he can only speak if he wins first, and winning like I won in this division is not an easy task. So pick a number and get in line, son.
Adesanya believes Till will beat Brunson and move closer to the title. But before Till calls one, his goal is to finish Brunson in the first round and send a message to the world. The British star has faced many skeptics on his way through the UFC welterweight and middleweight divisions and would love nothing more than to silence them.
“I know I have the tools to beat Robert Whittaker, Israel Adesanya, Marvin Vettori, Paulo Costa, Derek Brunson, Uriah Hall, Sean Strickland, all these guys I know,” Till said. “There’s nothing in my mind now that says on this back to me, ‘No Till’. No Till. ‘ Yes, we all have doubts. Will I win this fight? But when I say these words, I don’t doubt myself at least.
“Everyone is in doubt. And you don’t just doubt. by the fans, you are questioned by your loved ones. I love him so much. I like to just look in the face of people who I know doubted me, and not say anything, but just look them through their souls.
When Till decides to hang up his gloves, he said, he will be a fighter who will forever live as one of MMA’s greats. Either way to get him there, he’s willing to pay the price.
“Anyone else can say anything about me,” he said. “I do not care. I want something from this sport. I sacrificed too much fucking shit. I don’t want to be sitting there at 35, 40, no knees, no back, no shoulders, some missing brain cells – shit, mate. I get involved in businesses, and I get involved in the business of hating people and getting where I want to.
