Darth Vader actor Dave Prowse has died at the age of 85. The news is a shock to Star wars fans everywhere in the early hours. Famous, the bodybuilder provided the setting for the villain while James Earl Jones provided that incredible voice. Prowse actually came to the weightlifting circuit along with other heroes like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. That’s a lot of childhood heroes represented in different nations. He’s spent 50 years in various roles, but his stalking lanes in Vader’s outfit and helmet will always remain his most famous outing. Prowse’s agent Thomas Bowington shared a few kind words about the actor with the BBC.
“May the force be with him, always!” Bowington said. “Although famous for playing many monsters – for myself, and for anyone who knew Dave and worked with him, he was a hero in our lives.” He called this untimely tragedy a “truly and deeply heartbreaking loss for us and millions of fans around the world.”
The actor also spoke to the BBC about the process of choosing Vader’s role in 2013. He actually had his choice of Chewbacca or the villain, but ended up on the dark side. His reasoning at this point seems wise and poignant at the moment. You truly remember the big bad from stories forever.
“What actually happened was my agent called me and told me there was a gentleman in town called George Lucas who would love to see you,” he explained. . “So I went to see him and meet him. He took me to a room and showed me all these concept drawings. He said: ‘I would like to offer you one of the two parts of this film that I am making.’ “
“The first is a character called Chewbacca. I said, “What the fuck is Chewbacca?” He looks through the film on the goodies side, you see? I heard that and I said, “Three months in gorilla skin? No, thanks a lot!'”
“The other is called Darth Vader. He’s the big bad guy in the movie, you know? I said, say no more George, I will have the role of villain. He said, “Tell me why?” Think about all the movies you’ve ever seen when there are good guys and bad guys. You always remember the bad guy!
