According to a cybersecurity research firm, more than 540 million records on Facebook users have been exposed to the public on Amazon's cloud service. According to a report released by UpGuard on Wednesday, two third-party Facebook application developers posted the records in plain sight, causing another major data breach on the world's largest social network.
According to UpGuard, a Mexican-based media company, Cultura Colectiva, is responsible for the biggest leak. He exposed 146 gigabytes of Facebook user data, including account names, credentials, and details about comments and reactions to publications. It's hard to know how many individual users have had data exposed.
In addition, an application called At the Pool exposed databases, apparently containing data on user IDs, friends, photos and location, as well as unprotected Facebook passwords of 22,000 users. The application, intended to help people meet for offline activities, was closed in 2014.
UpGuard said it had alerted Cultura Colectiva and Amazon about violations of Cultura Colectiva in January, but that no action was taken until Wednesday morning. After Bloomberg contacted Facebook for a comment on this violation, an Amazon "storage bucket" containing Cultura Colectiva data was secured.
At the Pool data was disconnected before UpGuard spoke about it.
Facebook is under federal criminal investigation for having made agreements with electronics manufacturers to access user data, he has been the victim of a series of security breaches over the past year. The British analysis firm Cambridge Analytica, who worked with the Trump campaign during the 2016 election, had access to the data from more than 87 million users; and Facebook, last September, said that an attack on its networks had revealed information from nearly 50 million users.
