Dave Chappelle apparently spoke out in favor of author JK Rowling in a rant on his Netflix special that sparked even more controversy with the transgender community.
The comedian’s sixth installment in his Netflix deal, “The Closer,” debuted Tuesday and includes a moment in which he discusses the controversy that surrounded the author of “Harry Potter” in 2019 when she made publicly argue that transgender women are essentially a threat to the gender identity of biological women. The writer has doubled down on several occasions, arguing that trans women are not actually women, prompting a swift and immediate reaction from the transgender community as many activists continue to fight to dissuade people from similar negative stereotypes.
Rowling has been referred to as “TERF,” which stands for “radical trans-exclusionist feminist,” essentially a term for people who call themselves feminists while being transphobic.
“They canceled JK Rowling – my God,” Chappelle said in her special. “Sure enough, she said gender is a fact, the trans community got pissed off because (expletive) they started calling her TERF.”

“I’m the TERF team. I agree. I agree, man. Gender is a fact,” Chappelle added (via USA Today).
His controversial comments on transgender people were not the only time he discussed the LGBTQ + community on his special. Chappelle also discussed the recent backlash rapper DaBaby received after making homophobic comments at a recent Miami area music festival about people living with HIV / AIDS. He was forced to issue multiple apologies as criticism led him to be banned from Lollapalooza’s lineup.
In “The Closer”, Chappelle noted that the rapper, whose real name is Jonathan Kirk, has suffered more career disputes over homophobic comments than from a shootout he committed in 2018 that made a 19-year-old death.

“Part of the LGBTQ + community doesn’t know the DaBaby story,” Chappelle says (via Billboard). “He shot once [19-year-old Jaylin Craig] and killed him, at Walmart. It’s true.”

“DaBaby shot and killed a [man] at Walmart in North Carolina. Nothing bad has happened to his career, ”he continued. ” You see what I mean ? In our country you can shoot and kill a [man], but you better not hurt the feelings of a gay man. “
Fox46 reported at the time that charges in the shooting were dropped after a key witness failed to appear to testify. DaBaby claims Craig was trying to steal him, but his family say he wasn’t.
In October 2019, the Grammy-nominated rapper told Billboard, “I’m not losing sleep” over the shooting which he said was “inevitable.”

Chappelle, who had previously been criticized for allegedly transphobic remarks made in his previous Netflix special “Sticks & Stones”, concluded his special by offering a half-hearted truce to the LGBTQ + community when it comes to telling jokes to their subject.
