The comic has drawn backlash against some of its comments in its latest Netflix comedy special, “The Closer.”
During the special, which started on Tuesday, Chappelle said, “Gender is a fact. Every human in this room, every human being on earth, has had to go through a woman’s legs to be on earth. It’s a fact.”
He then continues to make explicit jokes about trans women’s bodies.
Chappelle caused anger in 2019 after making jokes about Caitlyn Jenner in her “Equanimity” special. His jokes about the trans community in his special “Sticks and Stones” the following year also sparked anger.
Chappelle refers to these past controversies in his New Ensemble.
Actress and director Taylor Ashbrook tweeted her disappointment on Tuesday.
“As a trans woman, I have generally championed Dave Chappelle’s specials because I think they’re hilarious and his jokes about trans women never felt intentionally malicious,” she wrote. . “The Closer changed their mind about it. This stage was so lazy and dishonest and I’m so disappointed.”
