Dave Chappelle’s Netflix special cancellation after trans comments leave critics angry

Dave chappelle‘s Netflix special is canceled after repeated calls to remove it from the streamer.

The comedian landed in hot water on Tuesday, on his sixth installment of his Netflix contract, “The closestdebuted. In it, Chappelle apparently expressed support for author JK Rowling, who was criticized in 2019 when she publicly argued that transgender women are essentially a threat to the gender identity of biological women.

The “Harry Potter” writer, 56, has doubled several times, arguing that trans women are not actually women, prompting a quick and immediate reaction from the transgender community as many activists continue to fight to deter people with similar negative stereotypes.

Rowling has been referred to as “TERF,” which stands for “radical trans-exclusionist feminist,” essentially a term for people who call themselves feminists while being transphobic.

“They canceled JK Rowling – my God,” Chappelle said in her special. “Sure enough, she said gender is a fact, the trans community got pissed off because (curse) they started calling her TERF.”

“I’m the TERF team. I agree. I agree, man. Gender is a fact,” added Chappelle, 48 (via United States today).

Among the many critics who took issue with Chappelle’s comments was that of Netflix. Jaclyn Moore, executive producer and showrunner of “Dear White People,” tweeted that the special made him cry. She also vowed not to work with the streamer again until Netflix ended the inclusion of transphobic commentary in its lineup.

“I told the story of my transition to @netflix and @most Pride week. It’s a network that has been my home on @DearWhitePeople. I loved working there. I will not work with them as long as they continue to broadcast and enjoy clearly and dangerously transphobic content. I love so many people I’ve worked with at Netflix. Brilliant people and executives who collaborated and fought for an important art … I was thrown bottles of beer. So, @Netflix, I’m done “, Moore tweeted.

Meanwhile, GLAAD issued a declaration on his Twitter account, writing: “Dave Chappelle’s brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities. With negative reviews and viewers loudly condemning his latest special is a message to the industry that the public does not support the platform of anti-LGBTQ rants. We agree. “

The National Black Justice Coalition, a civil rights group focused on the LGBTQ + community, also responded and called on Netflix to remove “The Closer” from its catalog.

“With 2021 set to be the deadliest year on record for transgender people in the United States – the majority of whom are black transgender people – Netflix should know better,” said NBJC executive director David Johns, in a statement to Deadline. “Perpetuating transphobia perpetuates violence. Netflix should immediately remove ‘The Closer’ from its platform and apologize directly to the transgender community.”

Chappelle’s controversial comments on transgender people were not the only time he discussed the LGBTQ + community on his special. Chappelle also discussed the recent backlash rapper DaBaby received after making homophobic comments at a recent Miami area music festival about people living with HIV / AIDS. He was forced to issue multiple apologies as criticism led him to be discontinued from the Lollapalooza range.

“Part of the LGBTQ + community doesn’t know the story of DaBaby,” says Chappelle (via Billboard). “He shot once [19-year-old Jaylin Craig] and killed him, at Walmart. It’s true.”

Fox46 reported at the time that charges in the shooting were dropped after a key witness failed to appear to testify. DaBaby claims Craig was trying to steal him, but his family say he wasn’t.

In October 2019, the Grammy nominated The rapper told Billboard, “I’m not losing sleep” over the shooting which he said was “inevitable.”

Chappelle, who backlash previously taken for the allegedly transphobic remarks made in its previous Netflix special “Sticks & Stones”, concluded its special by offering a half-hearted truce to the LGBTQ + community when it comes to telling jokes about them.

“I don’t tell another joke on you until we’re both sure we’re laughing together,” the comedian said. “Anything I ask of your community – in all humility – please stop hitting my people?” ”

Representatives for Chappelle, JK Rowling and DaBaby did not immediately return Fox News’ requests for comment. A Netflix spokesperson declined to comment.
