Dave Grohl said he was told Kurt Cobain died of an overdose just a month before the Nirvana frontman committed suicide.
In his recently published memoir “The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music”, Grohl explained that he received a call informing him of Cobain’s apparent death in March 1994. He described the feeling that his “knees went loose” when ‘he heard his The bandmate was dead.
“I dropped the phone as I fell to my bedroom floor, covering my face with my hands as I started to cry,” Grohl wrote, according to the New York Post.
“He was gone,” he continued. “The shy young man who gave me an apple at our first presentation at the Seattle airport was gone. My calm, introverted roommate with whom I had shared a tiny apartment in Olympia was gone.”
Grohl added that he “was overwhelmed” with “deep sadness” at the thought of Cobain’s death. Grohl described the Nirvana lead singer as a “loving father who performed with his gorgeous baby girl backstage every night before every show.”
However, Grohl wrote, he soon received a second phone call informing him that Cobain was still alive.
“Within five minutes, I went from the darkest day of my life to feeling reborn. From that day forward, I built my walls higher,” he said of the report. of how the experience changed him.
Tragically, only a month later, Cobain was found dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in April 1994. Except this time, Grohl did not receive a second phone call.

Grohl wrote: “It’s not often that I play the songs we’ve played together, but when I’m sitting on that stool I can always imagine him in front of me, wrestling with his guitar as he screamed at lungs into the microphone. “
