You hate to see it anytime, but especially in Spring Training. Cubs public service technician David Bote, who is hoping to create the club during spring training and will serve as a relief stop thanks to the absence of Addison Russell, was hit in the helmet by a Madison field Bumgarner of the match today.
Bote has just been knocked on the back of the helmet (at least that's what it looks like) on a 0-2 Bumgarner pitch. He is on one knee being checked. Now, leave the field with coach Matt Johnson and Maddon.

David Bote hit the helmet with a throw from Madison Bumgarner in the second inning. Dropped to one knee. He left the field on his own, but with a member of the Cubs and Maddon's training staff on either side. Ryan Court comes into play in Bote's place.

We will have the details as soon as they are available, but the Cubs will be as careful as possible about it in the spring. Let's hope that Bote recovers well. Or, in fact, hopefully, there will not even be anything serious to recover.
UPDATE: The initial word is good:
Bote was examined by the giants' doctor at the baseball stadium before returning to the Cubs complex. The initial tests revealed nothing of alarm, but it will be evaluated more overnight. Expect an update on Monday morning.
