Retired Red Sox player David Ortiz landed in Boston in an air ambulance on Monday night after a shootout in a Santo Domingo bar, forcing doctors from his home country, the Dominican Republic, to withdraw his gallbladder and part of its intestine.

Ortiz, 43, arrived in Boston around 22:30. after the Red Sox sent a plane to transport him to the Massachusetts General Hospital. The former MLB player, better known by the nickname "Big Papi," was shot at close range in his chest Sunday night at Santo Domingo's Dial Bar and Lounge.

"Our medical team here in Boston and the doctors in the Dominican Republic have confirmed that David's condition was still serious, but that he was stable enough to be brought back to Boston for treatment," said the Red Sox president Sam Kennedy at WCVB.

The national police of the Dominican Republic said that two men entered the bar after arriving by motorcycle. One of the men fired a single shot at Ortiz while the customers went to the shelter. After one man fled on foot, the authorities arrested a second, Eddy Vladimir Feliz Garcia, who was later taken to hospital after being attacked by a crowd at the bar. Garcia had already been arrested for possession of drugs in 2017.

The police did not confirm the motive of these men, but an Ortiz representative, Leo Lopez, said: "There is no doubt that this was a killer act on pay."

Two other people were injured in the shooting, including Dominican television host Jhoel Lopez, who was accompanying Ortiz. Officials believe that Lopez was injured by the same bullet that entered Ortiz, said the director of the National Police, Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte, according to the Boston Herald.
