The director of the Dominican National Police, Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte, said that Ortiz was at the Dial Bar and Lounge of Santo Domingo around 8:50 pm. when the shooter approached from behind and shot him. Ortiz was taken to the Abel Gonzalez clinic, where he was operated on, and his condition was stable, said Bautista.

Ortiz's father, Leo, met with reporters outside the clinic. He stated that his son was out of danger and that the bullet had reached no major organs. He said that he had no idea why someone would have shot his son.

Investigators are trying to determine if Ortiz was the target, said Bautista.

Bautista said two other people were injured, including Jhoel Lopez, a Dominican TV host who accompanied Ortiz. According to Bautista, police believe that Lopez was injured by the same bullet.

Lopez was shot in the leg and his wounds were not life-threatening, said his wife, Liza Blanco, who is also a TV host.

The police did not identify the third person or specify the injuries of this person.
