How did the shooting take place?
The surveillance images of the Dial Bar and Lounge show a filled-in area. The short video shows that viewers drink, mingle and manipulate their phone when a shooter approaches the top of the screen.
Only the shooter's legs are visible when a shot is fired and seems to touch Ortiz in the back. Ortiz sinks to his left and falls from his chair. Frightened passersby flip chairs while they flee.
The Ortiz agent, Fernando Cuza, who watched the video, confirmed to CNN that the man who falls from his chair is Ortiz.
"The bullet went through his stomach," National Police spokesman Felix Durán Mejia told CNN.
TV host Jhoel Lopez, who was with Ortiz, was also shot dead, according to his wife, Liza Blanco.
Who is the suspect?
Eddy Vladimir Feliz García, from the nearby town of Santo Domingo West, has been identified as the suspect.
The Dominican National Police said in a statement that Feliz García and another man had approached the Bar and Lounge on a motorcycle before at least one fire hit, hitting Ortiz and Jhoel Lopez.
The alleged gunmen tried to run away, but the motorcycle fell on the sidewalk.
The crowd attacked Feliz García and handed him over to the police, while the second suspect escaped on foot, police said. The suspect was treated at Dr. Dario Contreras' hospital in Santo Domingo and is currently in police custody, the police said.
Several people were arrested in connection with the shooting, Duran Mejia said.
Ortiz does not know Feliz García, accused of drugs in 2017 and residing in Las Caovas, in the west of Santo Domingo. His motive for shooting is unknown at the moment.
Why did the Boston Red Sox send a plane?
On the night he was shot, Ortiz was taken to the Abel Gonzalez Clinic, where he was in intensive care after being treated for bleeding from the liver and removing portions of his bowel and gall bladder.
The Red Sox sent an air ambulance to recover Ortiz on Monday. He arrived Monday night and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Boston loves Ortiz. Of his 20 seasons in the Major League Baseball, he has spent 14 in Boston as a designated Red Sox hitter.
In 2004, he helped the Red Sox win its first title since 1918, ending the so-called "Curse of the Bambino". Supporters, mostly unruly, blamed the decision in 1919 to transfer legend Babe Ruth, aka the Bambino, to his rival, the New York Yankees.
Ortiz was also on the Red Sox title teams from 2007 and 2013. He was named MVP World Series in 2013.
The 2013 championship was held just months after the Boston Marathon bombings, which left three people dead and more than 200 wounded. Ortiz appeared as a champion of the city following the bombings and his tribute to Boston the day after the bomber's capture by the police drew the country's attention.

Leo Lopez, Ortiz's media assistant, said that Ortiz was convinced that the shooting was not an attempted robbery.
The investigators are reviewing the evidence in the case, including the suspect's Bajaj Platina motorcycle.
The Interior Ministry and police in Santo Domingo announced Monday the "temporary closure" of the shooting scene, Dial Bar and Lounge, after the weekend. The ministry's liquor control program has been put in place.
The club has three days to report on what happened while police continue to investigate the shooting, the ministry said in a statement.
Police were also falsely linked to the shooting after the identity card of an officer was shared on social media implicating him in the crime. The Dominican National Police issued a statement denying the presence of their agents.
"Our institution has no connection with the event that occurred in the Dial club on Venezuela Avenue," said the national police in a press release.
They warned the public against speculation and spreading false information.
