David and Jessica Oyelowo are set to produce Walt Disney’s reboot of the 1991 action-adventure film The Rocket.

The following The return of the rocket will be produced by the Yoruba Saxon Productions banner of Oyelowo, possibly starring David Oyelowo in the lead role. Ed Ricourt writes the screenplay, with Brigham Taylor also producing with Yoruba Saxon.

The deadline was the first to reveal news of the reboot’s sequel. The Rocket was based on the famous 1980s independent comic book by Dave Stevens and, as Star wars and The Raiders of the Lost Ark, was a loving tribute to the soap operas of the 1930s and 1940s.

The story follows Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot who discovers a pack of rockets and a costume to die for and finds himself embroiled in gangsters and Nazis, as well as Howard Hughes and the FBI. The Joe Johnston-directed film starred Billy Campbell as Secord, Jennifer Connelly as his aspiring actress girlfriend (a tribute to Betty Page), Timothy Dalton as a type actor Errol Flynn who is a Nazi spy and Alan Arkin as a Secord mechanic.

Disney has long considered a reboot of the film, but had to wait before a new take on the characters of The Rocketeers focused.

Oyelowo worked with Disney on the 2016 chess drama Queen of Katwe, and will then be seen in Doug Liman’s sci-fi thriller Chaos march and the Blumhouse production Only you.
