DaVinci Resolve is updated with support for Arm-powered Macs, and a beta will be ready for owners on day one. Blackmagic Design today released a beta of Resolve version 17.1 which includes support for Apple’s new M1 chip. This means that when the first of these new Macs is released next week, buyers will be able to dive right into a native version of a key movie-making tool.
Resolve is one of the industry standard applications for color grading, but it has grown into much more than that in recent years. The app also includes a video editor, graphics tools, and audio editor, plus the majority of its features are available for free, so it’s a great app for creators who are just getting started.
As Apple shifts users in the creative industry to these new machines, there are a handful of apps it will need to run reliably, and Resolve is on that list. Blackmagic also promises some impressive upgrades as part of this transition: in its version 17.1 announcement, the company claims that the beta offers “up to 5 times better performance compared to previous generation computers.”
In addition to M1 support, Resolve also received a major update this week with the release of version 17. The new version had a strong focus on Fairlight, Resolve’s sound system, but it also added updated tools for HDR color grading, cleaner interface for primary. color calibration controls, time sizing functions on the “cut” and “edit” pages, and much more.
Apple announced that Resolve will come to Arm-based Macs at its M1 chip reveal event on Tuesday. He announced that a number of other professional apps were on the way at the same time, including Photoshop and Cinema 4D.
