The Seattle Mariners placed right-winger Felix Hernandez on the injured list with his right shoulder extended. A day later, he became the 36th pitcher in league history to reach 2,500 strikeouts.
Hernandez (1-4, 6.52), 33, was unable to qualify for the third set in a 9-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, getting scored for seven points and six hits in 2. He has allocated 14 points in his last two starts in 7 innings and is 0-4 since he's won his first start of the season.
He collected his playoff goal when he made rookie Michael Chavis look at a lead at 92 mph. Hernandez is the fourth active pitcher to reach the goal, behind Yankees CC Sabathia, Houston's Justin Verlander and Washington's Max Scherzer.
The Mariners lost 14 of 18 and were beaten 23-6 in the first two games of a three-game series against the Red Sox.
They also opted for field player Braden Bishop at Triple-A Tacoma.
To fill the positions on the list, they recalled right-wing Dan Altavilla of Double-A Arkansas and chose right-hander Parker Markel of Tacoma.
