There is just over a week left before college football’s late signing period begins on February 3.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day signed 21 players for his 2021 class at the start of the signing period in mid-December. This class remains ranked second in the ranking of the 247Sports Composite class.
Clearly, the Buckeyes are following a number of key prospects for 2021 as late signing day approaches. This group includes Washington DE JT Tuimoloau (ranked third nationally) and California LB Raesjon Davis (ranked 45th).
Speaking at his first off-season press briefing last Friday, Day said there was not much room left for new 2021 signatories.
“We really don’t have much,” Day said. “We’re pretty full right now. We have a pretty healthy list. It can always change. We may have a place available. Other than that, we’re pretty full.
“We will continue to assess and continue to review it. We’re continually recruiting guys here for the next signing day. We would probably have a place for a guy.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in mid-March, the NCAA has not allowed prospects to make official visits to college campuses. Athletics staff were also not allowed to make home visits, see prospects during live games, or host prospects for unofficial campus visits.
Day said he was not aware of any changes to these upcoming NCAA restrictions.
“I haven’t heard any updates on whether the guys can visit the campus yet,” the coach said. “I guess we’ve been shutting down for a year since we had recruits on campus, which is amazing.”
Ohio State scholarships: the unofficial tally
Because the NCAA has ruled the 2020 season to be a “free year” of eligibility, it can be a bit tricky to project the actual eligibility years for players returning from Ohio state in 2021.
It is unclear whether OSU will keep each player in the same year they were listed as in 2020 or advance each player by one year with the idea that they can each choose to stay an additional season after their four-year term. finished.
To try to decipher the number of purses available, we have put most of these players forward by one year. So, juniors in 2020 are listed here as seniors in 2021 – although they could all choose to return in 2022 and theoretically not “count” towards the limit of 85 scholarships.
Likewise, it looks like the state of Ohio will have four fifth-year seniors returning in 2021 who would be “exempt” from relying on the scholarship total. These players are DT Haskell Garrett, DT Antwuan Jackson, CB Marcus Williamson and OT Thayer Munford.
Remember, OSU lost five subclasses at the start of the NFL. This group includes quarterback Justin Fields, OL Josh Myers, OL Wyatt Davis, DT Tommy Togiai and CB Shaun Wade.
According to our unofficial tally, the state of Ohio has 83 “counters” out of the total scholarships planned for 2021 as of today. This group includes 12 seniors, 16 juniors, 34 sophomores and 21 incoming freshmen.
