Videos and photos circulating on social media show a maskless DC mayor, Muriel Bowser, celebrating a grand wedding in the district on Saturday despite a newly reinstated indoor mask tenure in the nation’s capital.

Social media posts show many people attending the wedding on Saturday at The LINE DC, a 5-star hotel in Adams Morgan.

Bowser performed the wedding on the roof of the hotel before having a drink and dancing inside later.

Bowser has reinstated an indoor mask mandate in DC, regardless of vaccination status, following the alarming spike in new COVID-19 infections caused by the Delta variant.

DC Health’s Dr LaQuandra Nesbitt said the daily case rate had quintupled since early July and the district currently has a “substantial” transmission rate as the variant spreads across the country.

“Given the trends in the cases that we’re seeing, we want to move forward, nip it in the bud,” Bowser said Thursday. “We know that masks can be very effective at this.”

the Washington Examiner first reported Mayor Bowser’s presence at the largely unmasked event.

Bowser’s office sent FOX 5 this statement which says in part:

“On Saturday, July 31, Mayor Bowser held an outdoor wedding ceremony on the rooftop, followed by dinner indoors. The mayor wore a mask indoors as per the mandate, and the organizers and the Site staff worked to create a safe environment for staff and guests. The Friday evening, July 30th questioned by conservative media was outdoors on a rooftop. “

“We continue to stress that everyone should be vaccinated as soon as possible and wear a mask in indoor public places to protect yourself, your loved ones and neighbors,” the statement said.

The statement did not relate to a published photo of a mayor without a Bowser mask inside during the wedding dinner, and not eating or drinking.

Sophie Penichet, general manager of The LINE, said in a statement that the hotel does not comment on guests at private events.

“The safety of our team, our guests and the community at large is our top priority. The Line Hotel adheres to the updated mandate on masks and requires that all employees and guests be masked while they are on duty. ‘indoors, or not actively eating or drinking, ”Penichet told FOX 5.
