D.C. United maintained his rank at the top of the Eastern Conference after defeating the Columbus Crew SC 3-1 at the Audi Field on Saturday.
The victory not only allowed D.C. to remain tied for points with the Philadelphia Union at the Eastern Summit, but also allowed Ben Olsen's team to get out of three games without a win.
After 20 minutes of tense play, Pedro Santos thought he had put Columbus in the lead in the 22nd minute, but the goal was recalled after Video Review's criticism for an apparent foul of Wil Trapp's coach. Five minutes later, D.C. United took advantage through Luciano Acosta, indirectly on a Wayne Rooney free kick.
In the first half, another video review determined a penalty for a handball in the Columbus play area by Trapp. Rooney converts the kick to double United's lead at the break.
Paul Arriola added to the lead in the second half, with a skewed effort in the box just after the hour of play to raise the score to 3-0.
The crew had a lifeline in the 75th minute when Dc goalkeeper Bill Hamid scored a corner in his own net to take the score to 3-1. But United maintained their advantage to see the win.
