The Dungeons & Dragons team has revealed Fizban’s Treasure of the Dragons, a new source book for D&D 5th Edition focusing only on the famous monsters that serve as the game’s namesake.
Fans of older versions of D&D will likely recognize the main character, Fizban the Fabulous – who also provides point of view commentary throughout the book, similar to the notes by fictional author Volothamp Geddarm in Volo’s Guide to Monsters – de Dragonlance, the AD&D Campaign Setting and novel series.

It’s important to note, however, that Fizban’s Treasury is not a Dragonlance source book, despite recent posts and announcements for other realms like Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft on Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos from this. fall outside of The Forgotten Realms game default setting. . “We’re happy to reintroduce at least some elements of that,” said Ray Winniger, D&D executive producer for Wizard’s of the Coast. “It’s not [a Dragonlance book], this is truly a book about dragons across the entire D&D multiverse; it’s not specific to any given D&D world. “
“There is an idea running through this book that each dragon has echoes of itself on other worlds of the material plane,” adds James Wyatt, a veteran writer and game designer working on both Fizban’s Treasure. and on the next D&D x MTG cross bridge. “They don’t come from the outside, they were there when it was created… Dragons are an essential part of the world, which is why we named the game after them.”
Wyatt says the book consists of three main sections – a bestiary, full of new blocks of stats and descriptions of dragon creatures ranging from tiny drakes and wyverns to large, massive, divine Wyrms, which eclipses even ancient dragons that have long sat down. at the top of the D&D Food Chain Monster Manual. “It’s almost like fighting two monsters back to back, both of which have challenge ratings over 20,” Wyatt laughs. “These are enormous forces of magic and nature that bend the world around them and wreak havoc wherever they go.”
The other two sections will feature new character options for players and a plethora of DM tools and information. It introduces two new subclasses for the Monk and Ranger – Path of the Ascending Dragon and Drake Warden, respectively – as well as new options for Dragonborn characters who wish to descend from Gem dragons rather than the classic Chromatic or Metallic.

For Dungeon Masters, Fizban’s Treasure contains a horde of information not only about these Gem dragons – who are particularly different from their traditional siblings thanks to their powerful psyonic power and unusual damage types (e.g., their weapons breathing can deal radiant or necrotic damage as opposed to fire or acid damage) – but also plenty of options for the lore and character of D&D most famous monsters. “We’ve tried to take a ‘show, don’t say’ approach when we talk about dragons,” Wyatt said. “Rather than telling you for a moment about the personalities of the Brass Dragons, we are giving you a Personality Trait Chart that you can use at random or choose from when creating a Brass Dragon.”
While the book contains a fair amount of Official Lore ™, Wyatt says it’s all about giving gamers and DMs more tools and toys to play in their own game worlds. “Even though we are in the final stages of preparation for printing, I mark the impressions on one side and write notes for my next campaign on the other. “
Fizban’s Treasure of the Dragons will be released on October 19, 2021, and includes standard coverage available at all online retailers and bookstores, as well as alternate coverage available at your friendly neighborhood game and entertainment store.
