New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio did not rule out a mandatory coronavirus vaccine for New York Police Department officers and suggested nothing was on the table.
“We are looking at all options,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday during his weekly appearance on Brian Lehrer’s WNYC radio show.

“In the next few days, I will be talking about additional steps for different parts of the city, our workforce and beyond, different things that we are going to look at, different things that we are going to do,” added the mayor. “But it’s still several days away because we’re doing a very meticulous analysis of the next step that makes sense.”
De Blasio launched a potential vaccine warrant for the NYPD, the nation’s largest police department, for several weeks. The department’s vaccination rate lags behind the rest of the city, with some agents categorically refusing to be vaccinated.
As of Wednesday, 68% of the NYPD workforce were vaccinated, according to Commissioner Dermot Shea, compared to 76% of adult New Yorkers who were fully vaccinated. The NYPD has approximately 34,500 uniformed personnel and approximately 17,700 people in non-uniform support positions.

“We lost three members last week, two of them to COVID, and I think all of this is unnecessary to some extent,” Shea said in August. “And I think everyone across the country should really embrace these vaccines.”
The state has made vaccines mandatory for healthcare workers, and New Yorkers must show proof of vaccination to eat indoors at restaurants or attend sporting events. De Blasio initially allowed teachers in public schools to be vaccinated or regularly submit negative COVID-19 tests, but toughened the rule this summer by requiring all teachers to be vaccinated without the option of testing.
Police departments across the country have faced the prospect of being forced to receive the coronavirus vaccine and in some cases this has caused frustration among law enforcement officials.
A San Francisco, California, union representing local sheriff deputies warned in August that officers will resign or retire if they are forced to receive the coronavirus vaccine.
