It was odd, even for a mayor who once said – seven years after his administration – that New York City needed to be saved while standing under a blue whale model.
For one thing, Bill de Blasio’s eighth and final State of the City address wasn’t even a speech.
Not a single part of the presentation was live.
And never once during the entire 28-minute pre-taped online affair has Hizzoner ever turned to the camera to speak directly to the audience.
Instead, New Yorkers (if there were any beyond the journalists paid to do so) were treated with often generic images of the city – sometimes scenes from pre-pandemic life mixed in ways. jarring with those that were clearly shot after the coronavirus – as narrator de Blasio played.
Generic stock music playing in the background. The text sometimes flashed on the screen as de Blasio outlined his program for 2021 under the banner “ A recovery for us all ”.
“The future begins here in New York. This is the place where people need to come, this is the place where people need to invest, ”Hizzoner said near the end of the 30 minute commercial. “We will show the world, day by day.”
An hour after the video uploaded, it had only been viewed 423 times.
