Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city’s public schools would be in session on Monday – but warned that “we must continue to fight with everything we have” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In a tweet, Hizzoner cited 937 new cases of COVID-19 and a seven-day test positivity rate of 2.57%.
De Blasio delayed his decision to shut down the country’s largest school system on Saturday after reporting that the Big Apple’s infection rate on a seven-day moving average fell from 2.83 on Friday to 2.47%.
He said if the infection rate reached 3%, school buildings in the city would close.
The seven-day infection rate has steadily increased in recent days. It was 2.6% on Thursday and 2.83% on Friday, when de Blasio warned parents to plan for a possible shutdown.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday that de Blasio should “seriously consider” making school-by-school closure decisions rather than shutting down the entire system.
