KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chris Jones’ change in stance and the development of some young players made Taco Charlton consumable and the Kansas City Chiefs released the veteran defensive end on Monday. The Chiefs have fallen to the NFL limit of 80 players.
“Taco is going to play in the league,” said coach Andy Reid. “He’s too good a player not to do it. It just didn’t work in this case.
“The way these cuts are put together is a little different from years ago. You have to make these decisions. [earlier]. It was obviously a difficult decision. I hope he’ll hang on to someone or eventually come back here ”
Jones mainly plays the defensive end after going from tackle and has two sacks in two preseason games. The Chiefs are also pleased with the progress of ends Mike Danna and Tim Ward.
Charlton joined the Chiefs last season after two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and one with the Miami Dolphins. He appeared in seven games as a substitute with two sacks before a broken ankle ended his season prematurely.
Charlton, the Cowboys’ 2017 first-round pick, had nine sacks in three NFL seasons before joining the Chiefs.
The Chiefs also eliminated two veterans, safety Will Parks and offensive lineman Bryan Witzmann, as well as young quarterback Anthony Gordon and linebacker Riley Cole.
