DEA agent injured in Amtrak shooting in Tucson identified

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) – At Friday’s funeral for DEA Agent Mike Garboofficials identified the other DEA agent injured in Monday’s shooting at the Tucson Amtrak station.

Garbo, DEA Constable Steve Fox, and a Tucson Police Officer were part of a task force find a train in downtown Tucson Monday, October 4. The Counter Narcotics Alliance was tracking a tip and doing a drug, gun and money check.

Authorities said officers saw Darrion taylor and Devonte Okeith Mathis sitting in the same row on a train car. Mathis then allegedly moved several bags away from him and said they were not his when asked.

Officers found nearly five pounds of marijuana and 50 packets of edibles in one of the bags.

According to court documents, Taylor then opened fire on the task force without warning.

Garbo, Fox, and the TPD officer were all shot by Taylor. Garbo, 51, has died, leaving behind a wife and daughter. Fox sustained serious injuries and the TPD officer was also shot, but KOLD was told he had to survive. Taylor died after police fired back while Mathis was taken into custody as soon as the shots rang out.

At Garbo’s funeral on Friday, October 8, officials said Fox was watching the funeral from the hospital.

Lisa Monaco, Deputy Attorney General of the United States, mentioned the TPD officer during the memorial service. The officer was at the funeral and read a poem from a plaque for Garbo’s daughter.
