Boston – A death certificate confirms the famous Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger died from a blunt head injury in prison last year. The document obtained by NBC Boston and CNN indicates that Bulger, aged 89, was "assaulted by one or more others" and was found in his cell at 8:21 am on October 30th.

Bulger was serving a life sentence for 11 murders and other crimes when he was beaten to death in his cell a few hours after being transferred to a West Virginia jail. According to the death certificate, the approximate time between the injuries sustained by Bulger during the attack and his death was "minutes".

The Boston Globe reported previously Bulger's eyes were almost torn out and two detainees, including a mafia man found guilty, were seen on a surveillance video entering his cell

Bulger came to power by freeing his rivals. In the 70s to the 90s, he apparently led the Winter Hill gang with impunity, having paid police and FBI agents. His brutality and ruthlessness inspired the character of Jack Nicholson in "The Departed" and Johnny Depp described it in the movie "Black Mass".

In 1995, Bulger and his long – time girlfriend, Catherine Greig, prepared for an imminent federal indictment, began running, placing him on the list of the most wanted by the FBI.

When they were finally found 16 years later, they were using fake names and appearing as retirees in Southern California. Scott Garriola, the FBI's special agent who arrested Bulger, spoke with Steve Kroft for 60 Minutes in 2013.

"I asked him to identify himself and it did not go well, he asked me to identify what I did, and I told him asked, I said: "Are you Whitey Bulger?" He said, "Yes," Garriola said.

Bulger's death was not charged, but officials said: two gangsters from Massachusetts are suspected in his murder.
