According to authorities, a police officer on leave from Baltimore has been the victim of a lethal overdose of heroin at a motel.

The Baltimore Sun reports that officer Joseph Banks Jr. died Friday in a Halethorpe motel. Aged 25, he had been assigned to the Juvenile Reservation Unit.

A Baltimore County police report says that Banks had been using drugs with his girlfriend and that he had taken an overdose. Banks' girlfriend told investigators that he was sounding like he was having trouble breathing. She tried to administer Narcan to counter the overdose and called 911 shortly after 3 am. However, paramedics have not been able to revive Banks.

Baltimore city councilor Brandon Scott knew Banks. He called the officer's death another tragic example of the scope of the addiction.
